Family Friendly Rafting on the French Broad River - Advance Registration Required

While attending the conference this year we are making available for your enjoyment a rafting excursion down the French Broad River on Friday afternoon, courtesy of the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). You’ll explore the third-oldest river in the world as it winds its way through the Pisgah NationalForest and the stunning mountains surrounding Asheville,North Carolina. The trip consists of five miles of exciting Class II and III rapids, swift-moving currents and raft-sized boulders providing a fun, refreshing day outdoors for the family. Class III rapids like the S-Turn, Big Pillow, Pinball and Ledges are the highlight of the trip, and numerous Class II rapids keep the river trip busy in between. Rafters will have a chance to stop and enjoy the beauty of the French Broad during their river-side snack. You will learn about the rich history of this river, from its earliest Native American settlers to the industrialization of Asheville. You will also see abundant wildlife, including heron, kingfishers, bald eagles, and an occasional black bear. With warm water, big splashes, and wide mountain views, rafting the French Broad is one of the best entertainment values in Asheville. NOC provides all necessary gear and equipment. NOC’s French Broad Outpost is located near Walnut, NC, off Highway 25. With ample parking and a welcoming porch, it’s a great place to relax before and after your French Broad rafting trip. Onsite facilities include clean restrooms, private changing facilities, hot showers, picnic tables, and an outpost store with t-shirts, snacks, drinks, sunblock and other sundries.

The cost is $52 per person, which may be added to your registration form and fees. Please arrive by at least 1:00 pm for a 1:30 pm departure. The trip will take approximately 3-4 hours.

Children must be accompanied by a parent and at  least eight years of age to participate.

All French Broad River trips depart from the French Broad River Outpost (828-649-9480), located at 9825 Hwy 25/70, Walnut NC, 28743. From the Grand Bohemian Hotel, your trip will take approximately 33 minutes: Turn right on McDowell St. Continue onto Asheland Ave. Turn left onto Patton Ave. Keep right at the fork and follow signs for US-19 N/US-23 N/US-70 W/Weaverville. Continue onto I-26 W/US-19 N/US-23 N/US-70 W. Take exit 19A onto Hwy 25/70 toward Marshall, NC. After 8.5 miles, the road changes from four lanes to two. Continue another 6.5 miles and you will see the NOC buildings on the left. The parking lot entrance is at the top of the hill. Please note: Hwy 25/70 is a scenic byway and signage is limited. If you pass the red Walnut VFD building, you’ve gone too far.
